Before I started AZSSA, I spent years as a Director of Coaching for a competitive club program here in the Valley.
That title sounds important. What it actually meant was this: I was at the complex every single night. Setting up fields, running sessions, managing staff, coaching multiple teams across age groups from U-10 all the way up to U-19. On a full week, that was four to six hours of coaching every evening — back to back, sometimes overlapping, always moving.
There was a window of about ten minutes, right after I finished setting up for the U-16 team, where I'd catch my breath before the session started.
This one kid found that window.
Three nights a week, like clockwork, he'd appear at the edge of the field just as I was finishing. He'd ask the same thing every time:
"Coach Rizzo — can we kick around?"
No drills. No instructions. Just two people giving each other harder and harder balls to control out of the air — flick-ups, one-touch passes in tight space, tricks that escalated every session. He'd show me something new, hand me the ball to match him, then run off to join his team.
His skills accelerated faster in those ten minutes than most players develop in a full season of structured training.
What Nobody Tells You About Skill Development
Skill doesn't get built through obligation. It gets built through desire.
When a player genuinely wants to be on the ball — when they're chasing it because something inside them is lit up, not because a schedule says it's time to train — the repetition happens automatically. And repetition is the only thing that actually builds technical ability.
Think about the players who changed the game. The Brazilian generation. Messi in Rosario. They didn't develop their touch in structured academies. They developed it in the street, in pickup games with no coaches and no scoreboards, playing until it was too dark to see. Nobody told them to put in the hours. They couldn't stop.
That's not a coincidence. That's the mechanism. Joy drives repetition. Repetition drives skill. Everything else is just the conditions you create around it.
Why Pressure Is Working Against You
When a child feels safe — genuinely safe, not just told they're safe — their brain stays open. They try things. They absorb feedback. They reach for the ball even when they might get it wrong.
When a child feels watched, evaluated, or afraid of disappointing someone, something changes. Risk-taking disappears. The player starts doing the safe thing, the expected thing — and stops experimenting with the hard thing that would actually grow them.
This is why two players can train the same number of hours and get completely different results. The sessions look identical. The internal experience isn't.
Nearly seventy percent of kids quit organized sports by thirteen. Most of them weren't failing. They were protecting themselves from something that had stopped feeling worth it.
Pressure doesn't push kids to improve. It teaches them to play it safe. And playing it safe is the enemy of development.
What Your Player Really Wants From You
Your job isn't to motivate your player. It's to protect their motivation.
Real motivation — the kind that makes a kid find a ten-minute window at a soccer complex and show up three times a week — has to come from inside. You can't install it. But you can damage it without meaning to.
The car ride home matters more than most parents realize. "What was your favorite moment?" opens something. "Why didn't you shoot when you had the chance?" closes it. Asked consistently over a season, those two questions produce completely different players.
You don't have to get it perfect. You just have to stay on their side.
The players who go furthest aren't always the most talented. They're the ones who still love the game at fifteen because someone protected that love when it was fragile.
What Actually Accelerates Development
Once a player wants to improve, here's what makes it happen faster:
1. Daily touches.
Even fifteen minutes in the backyard builds more than two games a week. The brain learns through repetition — not through watching. The ball has to be at their feet, regularly, in a low-pressure setting.
2. Small games over big ones.
A 4v4 game gives your player ten times more decisions and touches than an 11v11 match. It's where technical ability actually gets forged.
3. A coach who gets alongside them. Not above them. The coach who makes a player feel seen is the coach that player will work hardest for. That relationship is where real development lives.
4. An environment where mistakes are expected.
The best sessions I've ever run weren't the ones where everyone got it right. They were the ones where kids kept trying things they'd never tried before. That only happens when getting it wrong doesn't feel dangerous.
